WHAT WAS THAT?
Sora, Farmington Bay Bird Refuge, Utah. It has snowed recently in Utah, and even as I was driving to a nearby wetland, snow was falling. I was uncertain if I would find any birds out that day. Luckily, shortly after I arrived, the snow stopped which meant that the birds would be out looking for food. Trudging through about a foot of snow, carrying my pack and tripod, my movement was slow. I would stop at each little water area that wasn’t frozen hoping to capture a Virginia Rail. As a friend of mine and I crossed over a bridge, and looked into a little water area, we noticed a new bird to me. It had similar features to a Rail, but it was smaller. I photographed it for quite some time, trying to be as humanely quiet as possible. I just knew that this was going to be “one” of those moments. My friend sent me a text later stating it was a Sora that we saw. This elusive bird image is one I will treasure. If you look in the upper right corner, you will notice the little habitat that it has made for itself. It kept moving sticks and leaves to see if there was something of interest below.
