WESTERN SANDPIPERS IN FLIGHT, GREAT SALT LAKE
As I entered Great Salt Lake on an airboat via the Weber River, I was greeted by flocks of Western Sandpipers. This was right before their migration period, so I’m sure they were strengthening their wings for their flight to South America. Great Salt Lake is the largest terminal lake in North America. Brine shrimp and brine flies have complete reign in the saltwater. It is estimated that 190,000 Sandpipers use Great Salt Lake as a migrational stopover, foraging in water less than 4 inches deep. The male prepares the nest site, a scraped-out depression in a flat patch of dry tundra, while the female makes the selection. During spring migration, they gather in the hundreds of thousands in California and Alaska. These spectacular flocks migrate to winter in Central America. (From All About Birds.)
